Winter is upon us and what better way to learn about the season through art when we are experiencing it. A new semester has begun and students will be learning about what they need to know by creating art everyone learns about snow.
In first grade for ex students create a number of projects relating to the cold; Snowflakes, Snowglobes, Snowman Crayon Resist, Inuit people, Arctic Penguins and Polar Bears. We read lots of books with stories about these subjects. Snow Bear, Snowflake Bentley.
In second grade cut out snowflakes designs. They also learn about textiles and how to weave on straws as well as perfect their skills in tying.
In third grade they draw and paint covered bridges in winter. Students’ draw and color 3-D birds after they study artist and environmentalist John James Audubon and his North American bird drawings.
In fourth grade create a Renaissance quilled snowflake they also work with textiles and after learning the five basic stitches; the running stitch, chain stitch, cross stitch, French knot and lazy daisy create a picture in stitchery.
In fifth grade students will learn about clay and create a hand built object in the stages of; making, greenware, to the bisque firing and a final glaze fire. The students also discover the art and history of medieval illumination and bring the art to the 21st century by creating their own.
